(Thursday), April 10 at 8:00 pm –the Jazz Composers’ Ensemble

This 9-piece group plays adventurous compositions in diverse styles—including a setting of a Portuguese poem, a recomposition of Cole Porter’s Ms. Otis Regrets, and three of my pieces including La Noche Mas Corta (The Shorter Night).

The latter piece is influenced by the music of Wayne Shorter and also by the musician to whom it’s dedicated—my friend and Argentinean drummer Tomàs Babjaczuk. I’ll be performing on guitar in the group.

Tuesday, April 22 at 8:00 pm –the Jazz Composers’ Workshop Orchestra

Live in historic Jordan Hall, a concert premiering the new works for big band by the NEC jazz composers. We all worked very hard this semester to create a program of exciting and enjoyable new music fit for this amazing band!

I’ll be conducting my new piece for big band—a piece about exploring a balance between beauty and swinging chaotic chromaticism. It has certainly pushed the boundaries of my writing. It also features solos by our wailing tenor saxophonist Kenny Pexton and screaming lead trumpet prodigy John Replogle.
